About

The “Taiwan Youth Festival Chorus” (TYFC) is the cradle for nurturing choral talents and culture amongst Taiwan’s youth. 2018 marks its milestone 13th year, inviting Professor Lszl Norbert Nemes, (deputy chairman of the International Kodaly Society), alongside guest conductor Thomas Holm (Music Department Chair of Northwestern College, Iowa, USA). TYFC is on a concert tour through Kaohsiung, Taichung, Hsinchu, and Taipei to nurture choral talents across the land, developing choral appreciation audience, and cultivate a flourishing Taiwanese choral culture. We have a louder voice because of our youth (green in Chinese) music camp.

In recent years, the Formosa Choir has been invited to the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, Malaysia, and Macau etc. to participate in international music festivals and performances. Through exchanges with outstanding international music institutions, we experienced the flourishing, diverse cultures and felt even more keenly, the need to strengthen local music education. Special care is needed for the preservation and promotion of local music, especially choral works in local mother tongues such as Hakka, Hokkien, and aboriginal dialects.

To further our mission of passing on local culture and music, we organized the first TYFC event in 2006. This event is held annually every summer, and nets over 100 choral lovers aged 16 to 22 years old. TYFC invites outstanding local and overseas musicians as instructors, exposing trainees to international artistic trends. Through the singing of Taiwanese works in their mother tongues (Hakka, Hokkien, aboriginal) and mother tongue masterclasses, students gain a greater appreciation of Taiwans beautiful multiculturalism. More importantly, students reutrn to their own choirs to share what theyve learnt and begin to appreciate the beauty of Taiwanese music, uplifting greatly, the music standards and humanistic qualities of the land.

From 2006 to 2017, the choir has been recognized and supported by many music educators, choral musicians, and parents. The passion and enthusiasm of the youth is a reflection of the Taiwanese choral scene and the spur for us to continue organising this event.More than 1,500 outstanding choral seeds have been planted over the last 12 years and we are looking forward to their future growth.
