What is the Kodaly Concept?

Named after Hungarian composer-pedagogue Zoltan Kodaly, the Kodaly Concept is a singing-based approach to music education, a structured and systematic way of learning, studying and performing of music. Apart from music literacy, ear & solfege training, curriculum planning and inculcating good taste in music, the on-going development of this approach has in recent years, embraced the use of music games, improvisation, movement and even visual arts stemming from the work of Kodaly's students such as Katalin Forrai and Klara Kokas.
The singing-based approach of the Kodaly Concept, while commonly associated with classroom teaching is highly relevant and readily applicable to choir conductors seeking to improve their professional conducting work, music pedagogy and choral programme with amateur adult or children's choirs. Conductors of instrumental ensembles will find workshops on rehearsal technique, rehearsal planning etc. readily applicable to their work. Likewise, music classroom teachers will find the exposure to quality choral repertoire, choral training and direction useful in uplifting their music classrooms to the next level of musicianship.

Who should attend the symposium?

Musician-Educators - E.g. choral conductors, classroom music educators, community music leaders (e.g. in church / community choirs), voice and instrumental teachers, theory teachers - seeking professional development or wanting an introduction to Kodaly Concept-based musicianship training and music pedagogy will be inspired and recharged in mind and spirit. The symposium will also be an invaluable learning experience for music students and young conductors who are starting professional work in teaching/conducting amateur singers and are hoping to meet and build a network of like-minded colleagues and friends. AKS is a pathway for those who wish to express an interest in furthering studies at the International Kodaly Institute (Hungary) of the Liszt Academy of Music.

I can only arrive after the stipulated registration time. Can I register after 11 August?

Yes you can. Please proceed to the information counter at the National Kaohsiung Normal University Ho-Ping Campus when you arrive. It would be appreciated if you could inform us in advance if you expect to come in after 11 August 2016 via email at eniquires@kam.sg.

Will there be proof or certificates for my participation in the AKS?

A certificate of study that states your participation in the Event, issued by the Kodaly Academy of Music and the Kodaly Institute of the Liszt Academy of Music, can given to delegates upon request for a small fee. Delegates who wish to receive certificates must record proof of attendance at all workshops and fulfil the minimum 80% attendance requirement in order to be deemed as having successfully completed the Event. If you would like to receive the certificate for the 2016 Asia Kodaly Symposium, please register online with the correct details and double check your intended name for the certificate when registering upon arrival in Kaohsiung with our volunteers/staff.

What is included in the delegate package?

Registering as a delegate gives you a delegate pass allowing access to all AKS 2016 events including workshops, masterclasses and concerts.

What are the costs for delegate registration?

500 Singapore Dollars

Registration Deadline: 31 July 2016, 23:59hrs (Singapore time, +8GMT)
Registration is considered successful only upon receipt of payment.

How do I make payment?

Payment by Credit or Debit card via PayPal is preferred.

Payment by bank transfers is also possible but all bank fees will have to be borne by the delegate. If you are intending to make payment by bank transfer, please ensure that the necessary details such as your name and/or transaction numbers are recorded to enable record tracing.

Cheque payments are only possible for Singaporeans and are to be made payable to 'Kodaly Academy of Music'. Note however that registration is only considered successful upon successful clearing of cheque.

Terms & Conditions

While KAM does its utmost to run the AKS as announced, changes in the program and schedule may occur and do not entitle the delegate to a fee reduction or refund. KAM shall not be liable for any failure of or delay in the changes or cancellation of the symposium for the period that such failure or delay is due to causes beyond its reasonable control, including but not limited acts of God, war, strikes or labor disputes, embargoes, government orders or any other force majeure event. KAM cannot be held liable for any damages and expenses incurred by individuals or any parties associated with this event. KAM recommends that delegates arrange for travel insurance.

Do note that photos, videos and various forms of media recordings will be taken at this event and may be used for KAM's marketing purposes across all communications channels. By registering, you agree to give KAM permission to do so at no cost.

The KAM website contains the most up-to-date information available and delegates are highly encouraged to continue visiting the site for the latest information. KAM reserves the right to modify these Terms and Conditions at any time and do so by posting the updated terms on the KAM website. Your decision to continue participation in the AKS after such changes have been made constitutes your formal acceptance of the new Terms of Service.

Cancellation Policy

In the event of cancellation of your registration, please be sure to notify KAM via email at enquiries@kam.sg with a reference to a bank account, including the SWIFT Code and IBAN (International Bank Account Number), where a possible refund may be remitted to. A cancellation fee will be charged based on the date the cancellation received by KAM, as follows:

- Until May 31, 2016 - 20% of the registration fee
- From June 1 to June 30, 2016 - 50% of the registration fee
- After July 1, 2016 - 100% of the registration fee (no refund)

There will be no refunds for no-shows, late arrivals, early departures or unused entry tickets.
 Any refunds will be processed after the Symposium (N.B. Administrative charges will be deducted from the amount to be refunded).
