What sort of singer profile is the SCS looking for?

As we aim to be one of the largest collectives in Singapore, the SCS is always on the lookout for new singers regardless of nationality, gender, age or musical proficiency.

The people we hope to attract are essentially friendly, open-minded to new/unusual musical ideas - good people bound by a common love for music, singing, learning and performance.

Whether you are a professionally trained singer, a chorister hoping to return to singing after a long break, a secondary or tertiary student wanting music enrichment or a first-timer wanting to sing in a choir in a safe and non-judgmental environment, SCS seeks to cater for differing levels and groups with the different choirs under its umbrella. If you love singing, sign up by clicking here!

What differentiates the SCS programme from others?

Repertoire
Choirs under the SCS banner will get to experience and perform an eclectic mix of choral repertoire that transcends different epochs and genres ranging from a cappella gems to choral-orchestral works, from Classical to Jazz, from Renasissance to music of living composers from Asia and elsewhere. Choirs may also get to perform with wind bands, chamber ensembles and orchestras.

Performance
SCS can expect to cooperate and perform in 2 concerts a year. To ensure quality of performance and as a sign of our commitment towards the long-term development of Schola Cantorum Singapore, the Kodaly Academy of Music Singapore is investing significant resources with singers and artists who are looking to work and grow with us for the long-term.

Process and Education
The focus is not only on striving for excellence in performance. The process of getting to a good level of performance is informed by (but not limited to) sound organisation, basic music literacy, vocal training, contributions from members as well as engaging and pedagogically sound Kodaly-inspired approaches that may be of interest to music educators, music majors, parents, children, amateur singers who love music and wish to be part of a greater community-at-large.

Members of the SCS will also from time to time, be afforded an opportunity to work with guest conductors/expert educator-clinicians, composers etc. from abroad and/or Singapore. Members will have access to participate in music workshops, serve as demonstration choirs etc., serving the local music community-at-large.

Tour
Choirs and members under the SCS banner may embark on concert tours abroad.

What are the choirs/singing groups that I can join with the SCS?

We have started with a select, by-audition only mixed (SATB) adult choir.

We are looking to set up an unauditioned mixed (SATB) chorus and a youth choir very soon. In time to come, we will also be forming ladies, male, children's groups as well as a cappella groups.

Please go to the registration page to indicate the singing group that interests you and one of our friendly KAMSG staff will contact you when the new season starts!

Is there a non-auditioned choir/chorus that I can join?

Yes! Choristers interested in joining the non-auditioned chorus may do so by indicating your preferences in the registration form. You may be asked to do a very simple (non-public if necessary) voice assessment so that you can be placed in the voice group that is the best fit for your long-term development! Register and indicate your interest with us NOW!

What are the costs involved?

Joining Fee

There is a one-time joining fee of SGD 20.

Subscriptions
Subscription fees with the Schola Cantorum Singapore are 30 SGD/month and a lump sum of 6 months is usually collected upon entry into the choir. Members who did not join in January and July need only make pro-rated payments. Members are required to commit to a minimum of 6 months and are encouraged in general to commit to all projects and practices within a 12-month period to ensure a good level of ensemble. Subscription goes towards defraying costs of rental, music as well as other administrative costs of the SCS.

Full-time students holding a valid matriculation card will be given preferential rates to participate in the chorus and/or chamber choir at 15 SGD/month (N.B. We are able to offer this limited special student rate due to an anonymous benefactor). The Kodaly Academy of Music Singapore has given special scholarships or internships to needy students for its activities - those in need of financial aid or seeking internships may write in to enquiries (at) kam (dot) sg. Scholarships, internships and financial subsidies are limited and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
