Professor Julian Su 蘇慶俊教授

Professor Julian Su is one of the most active and influential choir conductors in Taiwan.

Su graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Chinese Culture University in 1981, followed by a Master’s degree in Music in Choral Conducting at the Westminster Choir College in 1993. During his post-graduate studies, he studied with world-renowned chorus conductor, Dr. Joseph Flummerfelt. Su is now a faculty member of the Department of Music at Fu-Jen Catholic University and is currently overseeing Taiwan’s first and only doctoral programme in choral conducting. Upon returning to his homeland in 1994, Su has devoted himself to the promotion of Taiwanese choral music. Under his meticulous guidance, there has been significant progress in Taipei Men Glee (founded in 1994), Formosa Singers (1994 until present), Taipei Joy Female Choir, and the Muller Chamber Choir, etc. To grow staunch roots for Taiwanese choral music education, the annual Taiwan Festival Youth Choir Music Camp has been held since 2006, and Formosa Youth Singers was founded in 2008. His relentless endeavor in promoting Taiwanese choral music was recognized and awarded the Taiwan Cultural Devotion Prize by Taiwan Care Incorporated of the US in 1998. Su was also awarded the Fu-Tien Cheng Prize in 2011.

To bring to fruition his vision for Taiwanese choral music, Su has invited musicians worldwide, including Tyzen Hsiao, I-to Loh, Mei-chun Chen, etc., to present their choral creation – gathering top composers to interpret Taiwanese folk-songs anew, injecting new life into them whilst preserving itsquintessential Taiwanese essence. Over a hundred mixed and equal voices scores have been published in over a decade. In recent years, Taiwanese music has shone through the borders with Su’s participation in prestigiously renowned international music festivals and contests. He was invited as one of the judges at the 20th Takarazuka International Chamber Chorus Contest in 2003. Under his leadership, the Formosa Singers won two golds and one silver at the 21st Takarazuka International Chamber Chorus Contest in 2005. In 2007, he conducted the Muller Chamber Choir that won a gold and a silver at the 22nd Takarazuka Chorus Contest. Su was then invited by Church United Choir in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2007 as the lecturer in a choral music seminar where he gave masterclasses in conducting skills. In the same year, Su gave conducting master class and introduced Taiwan choral music at Karuizawa Choral Festival in Japan. In 2008, he was invited by Crystal Children Chorus Music Camp of San Francisco, USA as the guest conductor.

Julian Su’s contribution to the development of contemporary Taiwanese choral music is second to none.
