Studiorum 2017: Indonesian Choral Music Workshop by Tommyanto Kandisaputra

Mr Tommyanto Kandisaputra, arguably one of Indonesia’s most prolific choral directors and a highly sought after adjudicator, conducted a workshop on Indonesian choral music for choral directors and musicians on Friday, 17 March 2017 as part of the Kodaly Academy of Music’s Studiorum series. During the energetic two-hour workshop, Mr Kandisaputra introduced the participants to a variety of pieces by notable Indonesian composers. These included iconic works by Budi Susanto Yohanes and Daud Kusasih, as well as the rhythmic works by one of Indonesia’s brightest stars – Ken Steven. It was a rare opportunity for choral directors, composers, and musicians in Singapore to explore the richness found in Indonesian Choral Music with one of its foremost leaders and bastions.

Mr Tommyanto also gave a public talk at the library@esplanade that introduced the cultural diversity of Indonesia and how the diversity contributed to the richness of choral music in Indonesia.


Tommyanto Kandisaputra (Indonesia)

Tommyanto Kandisaputra is the founder, music director and conductor of Studio Cantorum Bandung Choir & Orchestra, which actively performs major works in Indonesia.

He is working as a voice consultant and conducts many choir development programs all over Indonesia for singers and conductors, giving choral seminars, workshops for choir and voice building, as well as the organizing of competitions. Tommyanto is the chairman and founder of the Bandung Choral Societywhohas been organizing concerts, collaborations as well as the Symposium on Church Choral Music since 2003. Heorganizedthe 5th Symposium on Church Choral Music in 2016. Tommyanto was a World Choir Council member and is the chairman of INTERKULTUR Indonesia since 2006.

Tommyanto Kandisaputra was the Artistic Director of The 1st Asian Choir Games in November 2007, held in Jakarta, Indonesia. He was the Artistic Director of the North Sulawesi International Choir Competition 2008 in Manado and the Tomohon International Choir Competition 2009 and 2010 in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Now he organizes the Bandung International Choir Competition in his hometown and the successful Bali International Choir Competition in Denpasarannually. He has also organized the “INDONESIA CHOIR FESTIVAL” in Medan, Indonesia and the Penabur International Choir Festival 2017 in Jakarta.

In 2014, Tommyanto was asked to be the Indonesian representative for the One Asia Cultural Ambassador organized by The Music for One Foundation, South Korea. This organization is dedicated to working with children and communities worldwide to reach their full potential through music and music education.

He conducted the Taipei Philharmonic Youth Choir on 4 May 2016, performing rich choral music from Indonesia at the National Concert Hall in Taipei, Taiwan. Tommyanto was invited to be one of the speakers at the Asian Pacific Children Choir Assembly in Okinawa, December 2016.
